Description

Artist Statement:

Every single day, more than 100 people in the United States die from gun violence.  Each of those lives is precious.

In 2018, 39,740 people died from gun violence which works out to nearly 109 per day (UC Davis/CDC).  Of those, each day, 66 deaths were from suicide (black), 38 were homicides (red) and 5 were from accidental or other causes (blue).

We must address these Unnecessary Losses.  We can approach the issue from multiple sides.  Improving our mental health system and reducing the stigma of those utilizing its services will address some needs.  Asking a friend or family member who is struggling if you can hold onto their gun for them until they are more themselves is another.  Legislation to tighten the rules on background checks and pass red flag laws will also help.  Those with a history of violence or abuse must not be allowed to own guns.  Public opinion and legislation must encourage gun owners to keep their guns locked and away from others.

There is no simple solution.  We must move forward on various fronts to drastically reduce the Unnecessary Losses we suffer.  So much potential and creativity are lost with each life.  Every life has value.
